MESSENGER

DEFINITION: This is messenger and clerical work involving the delivery and pick up of mail.

An employee in this class delivers and picks up mail and related material for offices on a designated assigned route according to a predetermined schedule. Work includes other duties that are mail processing or clerical in nature. Employees perform within a structured work schedule, requiring little need for adaptability to changing situations. Work may include transporting persons between designated points or on regular mail runs. Work may include the operation of a motor vehicle in delivering and picking up mail. Immediate supervision is normally received and work is initially reviewed with close scrutiny until the assigned route is learned.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Receives, picks up, and delivers mail and related material on a regularly assigned route and special assignments.

Performs delivery and pick up mail services according to an established schedule by working out of a central mail room or an administrative office.

Picks up and mails envelopes and packages at the U.S. Post Office.

Lifts packages (approximately 1 to 50 lbs.) to and from mail carts, tables, and shelves, and carries them to appropriate office locations, loading docks, or motor vehicles.

Distributes certified, registered, and insured mail to authorized individuals; and maintains a log record and copies of receipts for these special mails and forwards them to the supervisor or central records sections.

Uses a mail cart to transport mail, placing delivery and pick up mail in separate locations and sort the delivery mail by organization breakdown or room number.

Checks incoming mail to insure that changes in address are made when necessary.

Opens and sorts mail into designated categories placing it into labeled boxes or receptacles for the organizational segment or address.

Weighs mail to determine the proper amount of postage needed and makes certain mails are properly labeled and legible.

Operates mail processing machines such as scales, postage meter, and date stamping machine.

Files receipts, reports, correspondence, and other material according to established filing procedures.

Operates a motor vehicle to pick up and deliver mail and on other work assignments.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to memorize routes, office locations, and points of collection and delivery.

Ability to sort and classify materials into different categories according to name, zip code, room number, contents, etc.

Ability to understand and follow detailed, straightforward oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform work punctually within an established schedule.

Ability to keep categorical log records for such items as postage used, types of mail , and addresses.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations such as the adding and subtracting of whole numbers and decimals; and multiplying and subtracting of whole number or decimal multipliers and divisors.

Ability to perform light manual work such as lifting and loading mail sack up to 50 pounds.

Ability to file and retrieve materials by matching the item category with the appropriate file heading.

Ability to learn the operation of mail processing machines such as the scales, postage meter, and date stamping machine.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Possession of the required abilities.
