HEARING STENOGRAPHER

DEFINITION: This is difficult stenographic work in taking and transcribing verbatim notes of hearings and in performing related clerical work.

Employees in this class are responsible for taking stenographic notes of verbatim testimony at hearings involving several participants and the preparation of accurate transcriptions of the proceedings. Dictation is preparation of accurate transcriptions of the proceedings. Dictation is often taken at high rates of speed and under difficult conditions requiring the application of an unusually high degree of stenographic competence. Employees also prepare and maintain all case records and perform other clerical duties. Employees work in accordance with established procedures and are expected to follow assignments through to completion. Directions are received in the form of suggestions or general outlines, and transcribed material is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and content.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Takes verbatim testimony at hearings or conferences where several participants are involved; transcribes notes of testimony; edits and assembles final records.

Takes dictation of and transcribes correspondence, reports, and other material.

Notifies interested parties of times and places of hearings and decisions; prepares cases for hearings by assembling pertinent records.

Maintains files and records on cases.

Performs other clerical and stenographic duties as assigned.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of hearing procedures and methods of recording verbatim testimony under difficult conditions.

Knowledge of English usage, punctuation, and spelling.

Knowledge of office practices and methods and standard clerical techniques.

Skills in taking and transcribing verbatim dictation for sustained periods of time, received at rapid changing speeds and inflections from several persons.

Ability to type rapidly from copy or rough draft.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Four years of progressively responsible stenographic experience; and graduation from high school or business school, including or supplemented by courses in stenography and typing.
