JOB TITLE: SUMMER MEALS REGIONAL ASSISTANT

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Summer Meals job series describes work in the coordination and regulation of a summer meals program for children.

DEFINITION: This is specialized clerical work assisting with the coordination of a summer meals program for children.

An employee in this job ensures that meal sponsors are in compliance with state and federal summer food program laws, regulations, and policies and functions as a lead worker for Summer Food Service Program Field Monitors (Field Monitors) in a designated geographic area. Work involves reviewing site review forms completed by Field Monitors to ensure adherence to processing standards and compliance with program policies and procedures; conducting pre-approval site visits for new sponsors to assess the ability to provide summer meals and recommending approval or denial of sponsor applications; granting approval for emergency site changes; making periodic site visits to ascertain facts, obtain data, report violations of state and federal regulations and policies, encourage compliance with program laws and regulations, and resolve problems; and providing training and guidance to Field Monitors. Work is performed with considerable independence; however, changes in procedures and policies are reviewed with the supervisor prior to implementation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Reviews documentation from the summer meals program sites to ensure meals are properly claimed.

• Functions as a lead worker by distributing and interpreting work assignments, providing assistance, conducting on-the-job training, and reviewing the work of Field Monitors for adherence to processing standards.

• Answers questions relating to summer meal programs for department staff and sponsors.

• Trains new sponsors on policies and procedures of the summer meals programs.

• Assists in training new Field Monitors.

• Observes bid openings for food service contracts.

• Assists with resolving complex food service-related problems.

• Assists with determining the effectiveness of programs and compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and policies.

• Reviews information provided by Field Monitors to ensure appropriate records are being maintained by sponsors.

• Reconciles travel and time records for Field Monitors and submits travel and time records for payment.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of nutritional child food service programs.

• Knowledge of laws and regulations governing child nutrition programs.

• Knowledge of organized meal procedures and practices.

• Ability to read and interpret written materials.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• Three months of experience monitoring a state or federal child food service program;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
