COMPUTER OPERATOR 2

DEFINITION: This is technical work in operating computers.

An employee in this class monitors and controls the operation of a computer system according to program instructions and routines. Work involves preparing the computer system for operation and performing operations according to schedule and program instructions. Work includes entering messages by either switches or a typewriter console and receiving messages through a typewriter print-out or sequences of indicator lights. The most important aspect of the work is maximizing production while minimizing processing time through operator intervention in resolving computer halts. Work may include assisting in supervising and instructing subordinate operators and trainees. Employees are expected to use initiative and judgment in solving machine and/or production halts. Work is reviewed for conformity to operating procedures and schedules by a technical supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Prepares computer system for operation by loading programs and giving initial operating instructions; operates a computer by using switches or a typewriter to enter messages and commands.

Interprets messages from computer in the form of various sequences of lights or a typewriter print-out.

Determines proper operating procedures when confronted with machine on program halts.

Assists in supervising and instructing subordinate operators and trainees.

Participates in formal and on-the-job training.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of computer operating practices and techniques.

Knowledge of computer operating capabilities.

Knowledge of basic algebra and numbering systems.

Knowledge of computer peripheral equipment operation.

Knowledge of computer programming techniques.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision.

Ability to think in terms of computer logic.

Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with associates.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a Computer Operator 1;

                                                                                                                                                                                or

One year of experience in operating computer and an associate degree with major course work in data processing.

                                                                                                                                                                                or

Two years of experience in operating computers; and graduation from high school; or equivalent certification or formal training. Formal training in electronic data processing may be substituted for experience at the rate of 25 hours for one month, to a maximum of 12 months.
