COMPUTER OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION: This is technical supervisory work in the operation of computers.

An employee in this class supervises the operation of computer systems on an assigned shift. Work involves scheduling and supervising production and personnel in order to achieve maximum machine and personnel utilizations; resolving complex operations halts by revising existing or devising new operating techniques; and recommending improved service routines, production techniques, and modifications or additions to equipment. Work includes adapting production schedules to meet changing priorities and machine capabilities, and contacting manufacturer representatives concerning machine operations. Work also includes resolving highly complex operations halts by revising existing or devising new operating techniques. Supervision is normally exercised over a small technical staff. Work is reviewed for compliance with operations schedules through conferences and reports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises and schedules employees and production in order to achieve maximum machine utilization.

Resolves highly complex operations halts by revising existing or devising new operating techniques or by modifying existing programs.

Recommends improved service routines, production techniques, and modifications or additions to equipment.

Determines the need for consulting with computer programs, computer system analysts, and manufacturer representatives.

Prepares reports concerning manpower and machine utilization and shift operations.

Conducts formal and on-the-job training courses.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of computer operating practices, procedures, and techniques.

Knowledge of computer operating capabilities.

Knowledge of multi-programming computer operating techniques.

Knowledge of computer programming techniques.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision.

Knowledge of basic algebra and numbering systems.

Knowledge of computer peripheral equipment operation.

Ability to think in terms of computer logic.

Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with associates.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a Computer Operator 2.

                                                                                                                                                                          or

Two years of experience in operating computers, including one year in a supervisory capacity, and an associate degree with major course work in data processing.

                                                                                                                                                                          or

Three years of experience in operating computers, including one year in lead work capacity; and graduation from high school, or equivalent certification or formal training. Formal training in electronic data processing may be substituted for non-supervisory experience at the rate of 25 hours for one month, to a maximum of 12 months.
