IES DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR 1

DEFINITION: This is advanced technical work in database administration for the Commonwealth’s SAP enterprise system.

An employee in this job is responsible for managing SAP Enterprise Resource Planning system databases and database management technology for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s SAP enterprise system. Work involves installing, configuring, and upgrading all SAP Enterprise Resource Planning database applications software to include Business Warehouse (BW); planning and implementing database expansion, reorganization, and conversions; maintaining and implementing backup and recovery procedures; monitoring and providing quality control for database usage, disk storage usage and tape storage usage; monitoring, tuning, and ensuring quality control for database access performance; and creating and maintaining Enterprise-wide data dictionary objects. Work also includes developing technical standards, procedures, and guidelines for SAP and supporting databases; and providing consultative technical assistance in the design, acquisition, installation, operation, and maintenance of SAP databases. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a technical superior and is reviewed through meetings, reports, reviewing objectives, and the operational performance of the SAP system databases.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Creates, maintains, and modifies physical databases including the database storage structures and database objects ensuring that appropriate links exist and that keys are established to provide processing efficiency.

Designs centralized and distributed database structures consistent with SAP Enterprise Resource Planning system architecture and other organizational applications, operations, and networking goals and objectives.

Establishes and defines database backup and recovery procedures in a SAP Enterprise Resource Planning system environment by establishing the backup schedule and retention periods, monitoring backup processes and procedures, preparing scripts to reload and recover database from backup systems, and developing procedures for the reconstruction of lost or damaged data.

Monitors system performance, disk storage usage, tape storage usage, assess space utilization and growth, and recommends upgrades and enhancements to software and hardware to ensure optimal database performance based on current and future requirements.

Researches, evaluates, tests, and installs database software and performs database software conversions and migrations to new levels, vendors, or platforms while preserving data integrity.

Maintains and modifies specialized software and utilities and analyzes and resolves problem conditions attributed to database design or software in an SAP Enterprise Resource Planning environment. May involve contacting vendor or internal technical support on software related problems.

Interfaces with programming, applications development, distributed systems, operations, and operating systems personnel and users to maintain control of the configuration of the database structure, establish database access techniques, address database performance issues and resolve database problems.

Analyzes business processes, procedures, and problems to develop database and data solutions to meet business needs.

Develops and establishes data administration standards and procedures pertaining to data elements, data dictionary, data sharing, entity relationship diagrams and methodologies, and quality assurance.

Interfaces with the program user community, to include the Integrated Enterprise System Business Warehouse staff and the application development staff, in developing data models and resolving data quality problems.

Develops data management system manuals to document procedures for defining, creating, revising, and controlling databases.

Maintains knowledge of latest developments in database administration/management techniques by reviewing professional publications and/or participating in formal training programs, courses, and seminars.

Creates and maintains data dictionary objects in a SAP Enterprise Resource Planning environment.

Administers BSI Tax Factory software for payroll calculations.

Performs other work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of current techniques in database design, planning, application development, programming, operating systems, systems and network architecture, hardware and software capabilities, and capability planning.

Knowledge of on-line transaction processing and on-line analytical processing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three years of experience in the analysis, design and maintenance of databases in overall support of database administration and an associate’s degree in Computer Science; Management, Computer or Business Information Systems or a closely related field;
