IES BASIS ADMINISTRATOR

DEFINITION: This is advanced technical work in the administration, operation and monitoring of the Commonwealth’s Integrated Enterprise System (IES) SAP system.

An employee in this job is responsible for the installation, update, configuration, monitoring and tuning of all SAP component systems. Work involves monitoring the operation, activity and performance of the SAP component systems and operating systems; identifying causes of poor performance; developing strategies to improve performance; adjusting system parameters; and redistributing workload. Work also involves installing and maintaining SAP component software and updates, installing third party add-on software, establishing and maintaining connectivity between the component systems, identifying and correcting system connectivity problems, and configuring and monitoring batch jobs. Employees provide technical support and advice to contracted staff, agencies and other technical areas to monitor and resolve system problems, and plan and implement performance improvement processes. Work is performed under the supervision of an IES Basis Administrator Supervisor and is reviewed through meetings, reports, reviewing objectives and the operational performance of the SAP component systems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Installs SAP component software, system updates and third party add-on software.

Establishes and maintains connections between SAP component systems.

Identifies and corrects problems with system connectivity.

Transports system configuration, customization and other program changes from the development environment to the quality assurance, training and production environments.

Configures, schedules and monitors batch jobs to ensure the timely and correct operation of the system.

Installs, configures and troubleshoots problems with printers used with the SAP system.

Tunes application systems to provide optimal performance.

Monitors system logs, operating system statistics, work processes, spools, and background jobs.

Defines the number of work processes and the amount of memory used.

Provides technical support to contracted staff involving planning and implementing SAP systems, and monitoring, configuring and tuning server, storage hardware and operating systems.

Provides technical advice to functional and development teams on the design, use and performance of application components.

Provides technical advice to agencies on deployment strategies and infrastructure requirements, including network capacities, pc hardware requirements, front-end software installation and printers used with the SAP systems.

Performs other related duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of SAP application software.

Knowledge of SAP operating systems.

Knowledge of information technology and systems analysis principles and techniques.

Knowledge of the concepts, characteristics and capabilities of information technology.

Knowledge of the process of installing and configuring SAP software and peripheral hardware.

Knowledge of system fundamentals, memory management, power supplies and troubleshooting techniques.

Knowledge of the use and interpretation of diagnostic utility programs used in troubleshooting problems.

Ability to provide assistance and support to employees in the use of software application programs.

Ability to learn and apply Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s information technology policies and procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain SAP system connectivity.

Ability to design, write, and implement program instructions to automate processes in the SAP environment utilizing script programming methods.

Ability to perform a detailed analysis of diagnostic output from the operating system.

Ability to interpret and apply technical manuals, procedures and specifications.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors and user groups.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience providing Basis administration services which includes installing, updating, configuring, monitoring, and tuning SAP applications.
