SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Liquor Store Assistant Manager series describes work in supervising a shift for a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) Shift Independent liquor store.
DEFINITION: This is shift supervisory work in a PLCB Shift Independent retail store with annual sales of 333,501 to 471,500 units.
An employee in this job is responsible for directing staff engaged in customer service, licensee service, sales, inventory management, and merchandising; providing training and promoting safe work practices; and ensuring store cleanliness. Work includes assigning and reviewing the work of lower-level clerks and performing routine duties as required. Work also includes providing on-the-job training to lower-level store employees regarding store procedures and policies; completing accounting reports and inventory reports for the shift; overseeing cash management issues on the shift; resolving customer service and product-related issues; and assisting in the overall operational management of the store. Routine store duties are performed and directed independently, while guidance is sought from a manager for new or unusual circumstances. Work is reviewed by a manager through conferences and reports for adherence to policy and procedures and for the overall performance of the store on the assigned shift.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
• Work is differentiated from the Liquor Store Clerk series by functioning as a shift supervisor for a Shift Independent store and by assisting in the overall operational management of the store.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):
• Assists customers in locating products, recommending substitutions, completing sales, and packaging merchandise.
• Trains liquor store clerks in procedures for running registers, unloading trucks, stocking shelves, and building displays.
• Assists in the review of inventory replenishment orders.
• Assists in the review of reports on sales, personnel usage, marketing initiatives, inventory, and profits and losses.
• Uses a computer to look up inventory and locate products in other stores.
• Takes spot inventory of merchandise and records counts through the Point of Sale system.
• Oversees and participates in store cleaning activities.
• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the principles and processes of retail store operations.
• Knowledge of stock handling and inventory control methods and procedures.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of customer service.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in organizing and directing the work of others.
• Ability to assign and direct the work of staff assigned to the shift.
• Ability to read and interpret written policies and procedures.
• Ability to make mathematical computations related to sales and inventory recordkeeping.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):
• One year as a Liquor Store Clerk 2;
or
• Two years as a Liquor Store Clerk 1 or an Intermittent Liquor Store Clerk;
or
• One year of lead retail sales work.
