PROPERTY AND CASUALTY INSURANCE POLICY EXAMINER 1
DEFINITION: This is technical work in reviewing and examining policies, contracts, riders, endorsements, and applications of property and casualty insurance companies including fire, general casualty, inland marine, commercial property, general liability, credit indemnity, and homeowners insurance. Work includes contacting insurance company representatives to obtain supportive or clarifying information regarding policy or form filings. Work is performed with some independence, and is reviewed by a technical superior through an evaluation of reports and conferences for acceptability and adherence to established standards.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Reviews, analyzes, and approves or disapproves insurance contracts, policies, riders, endorsements and applications of property and casualty insurance companies, including fire, general casualty, inland marine, commercial property, general liability, credit indemnity, and homeowners
insurance.
Provides technical assistance to company representatives in the areas of policy coverage, proper cancellation, and underwriting guidelines to ensure that companies are in compliance with the Unfair Insurance Practices Act and cancellation regulations.
Answers inquiries from insurance companies, policyholders, and the general public regarding insurance laws, regulations, rates, policy provisions, and statutes.
Reviews non-technical rates and rules and rate manuals of property and casualty lines of insurance to ensure the rates are not excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory.
Maintains and updates insurance company and bureau manuals and department records to insure inclusion of current information.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of property and casualty insurance principles and practices, including principles and practices of underwriting, and the socio-economic influences of insurance.
Knowledge of rate-making principles and practices applicable to property and casualty insurance.
Ability to analyze insurance policies and related forms.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental employees, insurance company representatives, and the public.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Financial Management Trainee or an Administration and Management Trainee or in any other Trainee class which is management related that involved insurance policy examination work, including at least six months in the property and/or casualty insurance area;
or
Three years of experience in property and/or casualty insurance underwriting, or in drafting and reviewing and examining property and/or casualty insurance policies and forms, or in a closely related area; and satisfactory completion of two years of college or business school;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which included at least one year of experience in property and/or casualty insurance underwriting, or in drafting and reviewing and examining property and/or casualty insurance policies and forms;
or
Designation as a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter.
