DEFINITION:

This is professional editorial work organizing, revising and correcting manuscripts for publication.

An employee in this class corrects copy submitted for reports and other publications for style, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation and adherence to law or fact. Work often involves condensation of manuscripts to fit space requirements. Work includes editing of photographic and graphic materials for proper use in the publication. Work is conducted under the direct supervision of a higher level editor or administrative supervisor who assigns tasks and reviews the completed project for accuracy and adherence to style.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Organizes and edits department periodical publications distributed to employees or to the public.

Reads and corrects manuscript for style, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation and adherence to law or fact.

Rewrites articles and manuscripts to increase readability, interest, and impact.

Proofreads galley proofs and revises page proofs.

Gathers information for publication on department activities.

Maintains files of information, photographs, and photoengravings.

Makes layouts for the printer.

Edits photographic and graphic materials and marks them for size and treatment.

Writes typographic specifications for the printer.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation.

Considerable knowledge of the advantages and limitations of type composition and presswork methods.

Knowledge of the readability of type faces and line lengths.

Knowledge of the techniques involved in proper utilization of photographic materials in publications.

Skill in making layouts and dummies for printers.

Ability to find and correct errors in manuscripts.

Ability to rewrite manuscripts to assure clarity, adherence to style, and impact.

Ability to gather information for publications.

Ability to analyze data for presentation in publications.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, administrators, officials of the department and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

One year of experience in editorial work which has included writing, editing, and use of photography and graphics in publication, and a bachelor's degree with major course work in English, journalism or communication;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
