DEFINITION: This is supervisory and professional editorial and design work in the field of information and publications.

An employee in this class participates in and supervises the work of a small staff engaged in information gathering, writing, producing and disseminating a principal periodical publication or a number of small publications in an agency. Work involves conceptualizing, planning, analyzing, determining and, wherever possible, improving the publication content and look by insuring that the material is presented in an interesting and meaningful manner for the audience. Work is carried out independently, however, supervision is received form a supervisor who reviews work through planning conferences and observation of results.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Supervises and participates in information gathering, writing producing, and disseminating a principal periodical publication or a number of smaller periodical publications in an agency.

Participates in planning the content for each issue with supervisors and high level department administrators and makes assignments for obtaining necessary material and writing stories.

Assess and evaluates format, frequency, distribution and effectiveness of publication and production and production system; prepares bid proposals; obtains bids; and supervises preparation of contract for printing.

Maintains close liaison with program staff in agency, appropriate school districts, higher education institutions and other agencies in the state to obtain material for the publication.

Receives and handles all correspondence/phone contact in connection with manuscripts submitted or solicited for publication.

Holds regular meetings with publication staff and others engaged in information gathering for the agency.

Edits all material submitted for the publication; gives instructions to the printers on setting type; and other specific requirements.

Edits photographic materials to be used in publications and supervises the development and/or use of photographs and graphics appropriate for the publication.

Proofreads galley proofs, revises page proofs, makes layouts for the printer, and writes typographic specifications.

Maintains files of information photographs and graphics.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of publication planning, design, layout and production.

Considerable knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling sentence structure and punctuation.

Skill in editing for clarity, conciseness, readability and contemporary English usage.

Ability to use imagination and creativity in the field of writing and publication production.

Ability to recognize, develop and encourage clear, communicative and imaginative publications layout.

Ability to analyze information for presentation in publications.

Ability to gather information for publications.

Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, administrators, officials, of the department and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as an Editor 1;

                                                                                                                                                       or

Two years of experience in editorial work which has included writing, editing, and use of photography and graphics in publications, and a bachelor's degree with major course work in English journalism or communications;

                                                                                                                                                       or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
