JOB TITLE: DRIVER SAFETY EXAMINER

JOB CODE: 07510

DEFINITION: This is limited adjudicative work in the field of driver safety.

An employee in this job conducts hearings required by the Commonwealth Vehicle Code to determine facts involved in violations of motor vehicle laws and administer special point examinations. Hearings assignments are made by an administrative supervisor and decisions or recommendations are formulated by the employee. Work is reviewed by a higher-level program supervisor or manager through conferences and reports.

• Prepares for hearings by reading case appeals, rulings, documents, files, and investigation reports.

• Holds hearings with motor vehicle operators and their legal representatives.

• Writes the hearing decision, which involves summarization of material evidence, findings of facts, and conclusions; prepares and processes recommendations.

• Counsels and makes recommendations to motor vehicle operators on actions they may take to improve their driving habits.

• Administers and corrects special examinations for applicants with points and processes the results.

• Requests drivers under suspension to surrender their licenses.

• Provides information to drivers on license restoration procedures.

• Conducts review sessions for individuals applying for a Probationary License.

• Conducts driver improvement related training courses.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of legal, enforcement, and regulatory procedures and practices.

• Ability to read and interpret written materials.

• Ability to analyze and interpret facts, evidence, and precedents in order to make a recommendation or decision.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state and federal administrative officials, employees, court officials, and the public.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Two years of experience in legal or law enforcement work, or work involving the interpretation and application of motor vehicle regulations;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
