JOB TITLE: CORRECTIONAL INDUSTRIES SALES AND MARKETING REPRESENTATIVE

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Correctional Industries Sales and Marketing job series describes work involving the sales and marketing of products and services produced within a correctional institution.

DEFINITION: This is professional work in promoting and forecasting sales of Correctional Industries (CI) products and services.

An employee in this job is responsible for promoting sales within a designated region by developing and carrying out a program for the marketing of products and services provided by various CI shops. Work involves establishing and maintaining working relationships for the purpose of promoting sales of CI products and services and gathering marketing data for use in production planning. Work is performed with a high degree of initiative and independence and is subject to review by an administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and observations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Establishes contacts with officials of state agencies, schools, non-profit organizations, and political subdivisions to promote and arrange for the sale and delivery of a variety of CI products and services.

• Uses various marketing techniques to sell CI products and services including, but not limited to, sales appointments with qualified decision-makers, presentations to large and small groups of prospective buyers, and maintaining personal contact with key decision-makers throughout the sales cycle.

• Travels on a regular basis within a designated region to promote sales and marketing of CI products and services.

• Gathers information on customer preferences and needs in order to forecast future demands of their operations.

• Disseminates information concerning CI products and services through catalogues, price lists, samples, product seminars, and meetings with current and prospective customers.

• Develops reports concerning quality and other characteristics of CI products and services.

• Responds to inquiries and complaints concerning CI products and services and provides recommendations for resolution.

• Prepares formal price quotes and bid proposals to meet customers’ needs.

• Visits CI locations to expand product knowledge and improve coordination of efforts with production and services staff.

• Operates a motor vehicle.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of sales and marketing principles and practices.

• Knowledge of promotional methods and strategies.

• Ability to make sales forecasts based on marketing trends gathered from customers and other sources.

• Ability to establish and maintain customer contacts.

• Ability to prepare and analyze sales reports.

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year of professional sales experience in a manufacturing or service oriented production operation, and a bachelor’s degree in sales, marketing, business administration, or a closely related area;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
