JOB TITLE: TRANSPORTATION TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is beginning level technical work in transportation construction inspection and highway or bridge drafting in the Department of Transportation (DOT).
An employee in this job performs beginning level technical duties in construction project and materials inspection, bridge inspection, highway or bridge plans drafting, and related computations in the inspection and drafting processes. Work involves following prescribed methods and procedures, and applying specialized skills and techniques in the performance of a variety of technical duties. Work also involves performing inspections of routine phases of highway construction, or inspection of operations and materials at large materials producing plants. Work is assigned with general direction by a technical supervisor who reviews work for results attained.

• Serves as an inspector on a highway or bridge construction project requiring a variety of inspection operations.
• Performs inspections of highway and construction projects for compliance with contract requirements, department standards and specifications, and approved construction codes and plans.
• Performs inspection of operations and materials at a large producing plant.
• Conducts preliminary site inspections for issuance of highway occupancy permits.
• Conducts inspections of construction work done by municipalities, including inspecting work during construction and after completion to ensure that roadway restorations comply with standards.
• Plots alignment of structures, topography, and profiles; details abutments, piers, culverts, arches, and retaining walls; plots and calculates drainage areas and waterway profiles; and draws structures to scale on plans.
• Ensures proper drafting procedures were applied, checks various quantity calculations, and recommends changes to correct possible problems.
• Performs calculations to compute quantities of materials, such as volume of concrete, length and weight of steel reinforcement bars, volume of excavation necessary, and other related computations using standard formulas.
• Prepares maps and plans from preliminary sketches to final working plans for highway construction, including right-of-way maps, centerline drawings, topography and profiles, cross sections, drainage, and final construction plans.
• Prepares soils maps reflecting geographical problem areas, deed plot drawings, viewer plans, and other related drawings and charts.
• Assists the project inspector in preparing periodic cost estimates and progress reports summarizing the project work activities, including records of labor, material, and equipment used.
• Inspects stakeouts, elevations, grades, slopes, excavations, compaction of soil, and placement of materials.
• Performs drafting and detailing work associated with the development and preparation of highway or bridge plans from field survey notes and preliminary sketches to the final detailed working plans; and computes or checks computations for geometrics or pre-construction estimates for project material quantities.
• Analyzes field notes and sketches and calculates quantities of contract unit bid items for highway or bridge construction activities.
• Travels to field sites to perform inspections.
• Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work;
or
• One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics;
or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
