SENIOR HIGHWAY DESIGNER

DEFINITION: This is advanced professional highway design work in designing highway projects.

An employee in this class independently prepares or reviews complete sets of plans for complex highway projects, such as multi-lane, heavy traffic routes with interchanges and complicated environmental, economic, and right-of-way constraints. Work involves following complex design procedures in performing assignments. Work may include lead work over lower level technicians and designers engaged in highway design, drafting, and detailing phases. Assignments are performed independently and reviewed upon completion by a managerial supervisor for accuracy, adherence to established technical standards and results obtained.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Using CADD instruments, designs the most complex highway projects, such as multi-lane, heavy traffic routes with interchanges and complicated environmental, economic, and right-of-way constraints.

Develops complete sets of design plans for complex highway projects; prepares plans and specifications; computes cost estimates.

Reviews statewide contract proposals involving lighting projects of complex and complicated type designs.

Reviews complex design plans prepared by consultants for technical standards and adherence to applicable specifications.

Acts as liaison contact with consultants preparing various pre- design and design plans and special studies.

Coordinates department and outside agency activities relative to highway planning and location for the district to ensure the proper integration of pertinent data into program development.

Administers and coordinates a specialized engineering district function such as planning and programming, grade crossing, transportation systems management, pavement evaluation, and safety design liaison.

Prepares an engineering district's project proposal and estimate to include special provisions and indicating specifications, quantities, and descriptive material as indicated in related specifications.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of CADD methods, instruments, materials, and techniques in highway design.

Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the location and design of highway projects.

Knowledge of drafting methods, instruments, and techniques in highway design.

Knowledge of algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry.

Knowledge of departmental drafting standards.

Knowledge of the symbols used in drafting.

Knowledge of highway construction methods and materials and the preparation of cost estimates and specifications.

Skill in the development of final plans from engineering instructions and calculations.

Ability to do complex highway design work.

Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, blueprints, survey notes, and other records.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and consultants.
                    
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Highway Designer.

Two years of professional experience in highway design work including six months of CADD operation and a Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, or a closely related field.

Four years of professional experience in highway design work including six months of CADD operation and an Associate's Degree in civil engineering, drafting, or design technology.

                                                                                                                                           or

Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
