LANDSCAPE DESIGNER 1

DEFINITION: This is professional work in the field of landscape architecture.

An employee in this class is responsible for preparing moderately difficult landscape designs and specifications in connection with the development of state parks, recreational areas, and other landscape projects. Work involves the application of professional and technical skill toward the solution of moderately difficult landscape projects. Although assignments received are often limited in scope, they afford some opportunity for originality in design and planning. Technical review may be exercised over construction and maintenance foremen and other sub-professional personnel. Work is performed under general supervision and is checked upon completion by a professional superior for technical adequacy and accuracy, and proper utilization of established principles and practices.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Designs and drafts moderately difficult layout plans for picnic, parking, bathing, tenting, and other recreational areas.

Makes initial field surveys and studies.

Assists in the preparation of specifications and cost estimates for contract work.

Inspects project construction; makes recommendations for modification or change.

Assists in making general development studies for new park areas and the expansion or improvement of existing parks.

Prepares plans for planting trees, shrubs, vines, and for grading and drainage.

Performs the initial technical review of park and recreation area plans submitted by local governments.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of building architecture.

Knowledge of engineering principles and practices as applied to landscape architecture.

Ability to develop original designs of state parks, recreational areas, and other landscape projects.

Ability to evaluate landscape projects, plan improvements, and compile cost estimates.

Ability to review plans and specifications for the construction and maintenance of parks and recreational areas.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor's degree with major course work in landscape architecture from an accredited college or university;

Six years of experience in the practice of landscape architecture.
