JOB TITLE: BRIDGE INSPECTION CRANE TECHNICIAN

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Bridge Inspection Crane Technician job series describes work in crane operation for bridge inspections in the Department of Transportation.

DEFINITION: This is technical work in the Commonwealth’s Bridge Inspection Program in the Department of Transportation.

An employee in this job performs a variety of duties involved in the deployment and operation of a special large vehicle-mounted crane apparatus used in the Commonwealth’s Statewide Bridge Safety Inspection Program. Work involves driving the vehicle to the work site, assisting with proper crane deployment and safety setup for the maintenance and protection of traffic, and safely operating the bridge aerial platform bucket used to permit inspectors to reach the different elements of a bridge structure and includes assisting bridge inspectors with inspection work. Work is reviewed for compliance with proper procedures by a supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

•Deploys and operates a bridge inspection crane with a hydraulically operated, multi-boom, aerial platform bucket to provide a safe working condition for bridge inspectors in the conduct of bridge inspection and maintenance duties.

•Drives vehicle-mounted apparatus to work site and assists with maintenance and protection of traffic control safety setup.

•Assists supervisor with the proper deployment of the inspection crane following established operating guidelines.

•As a certified bridge inspector, assists bridge inspectors as needed in identifying deficiencies on a bridge structure and producing reports.

•Assists with the proper daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs of bridge inspection equipment.

•Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

•Knowledge of the practices applied to the safe operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

•Knowledge of preventive maintenance techniques and practices sufficient to maintain proper equipment performance.

•Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the operation of large equipment upon roadways.

•Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• All positions require an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent. Certain positions may also require that the Manual Transmission Restriction (E) is removed or equivalent.

• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

• All employees in this job must obtain an active certification in the operation of trucks and crane equipment, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, within the probationary period.

• Certain positions in this job require an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed or equivalent.

• Certain employees must obtain an active certification as a bridge inspector, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, within one year of appointment, and continuously maintain it while employed in this job by attending and successfully passing the Bridge Inspection Refresher course every two years following original certification.
