ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is beginning-level technical work in a training nature in one of several fields of engineering technology.

An employee in this class performs a variety of beginning-level duties designed to develop technical skills and proficiency in a specialized field of engineering technology such as: surveying, drafting and designing; construction and materials inspection; and traffic control or traffic planning. Candidates are selected and placed in specific work areas on the basis of demonstrated aptitude and interest in a technical engineering specialty. Initially, employees perform a variety of limited technical tasks, but as technical proficiency is acquired, increasingly difficult duties are assigned. Work is assigned in detail by a technical superior and is reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, adherence to technical standard, and technical development.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Serves as a member of a survey party to learn and perform a variety of duties in conjunction with preliminary , construction, and final surveys; receives instructions in the use of all surveying instruments, in reading plans and blueprints, and in the principles of surveying.

Participates in the preparation of construction plans for roads, buildings, bridges, dams, or other engineering structures by plotting alignments, profiles, topography, depicting terrain and its effect on structural support or performing miscellaneous other drafting and detailing assignments; computes or checks computations for design geometric or pre-construction estimates of project material quantities.

Inspects construction materials and workmanship on routine phases of construction assure adherence to specifications and standards.

Participates in the preparation of plans for piles, footings, foundations and other steel and concrete members necessary to support the structural design.

Assists in traffic control studies pertaining to speed restrictions, passing areas, accident investigations, signalization, signing, or similar studies.

Assists in a variety of field data collection and analysis duties for traffic planning purposes; participates in conducting traffic counts, origin and destination surveys, and other field studies to obtain a knowledge of the theory and practices of obtaining various types of data; assists in developing the methods of expanding and projecting traffic data.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of college-level algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Some knowledge of the physical sciences.

Skill in numerical and verbal reasoning.

Ability to apply the principles and methods of the physical sciences to technical engineering problems.

Ability to apply the principles of engineering technology to specific problems.

Ability to read and interpret technical literature, engineering plans, and tables.

Ability to use the basis instruments and equipment required in the performance of technical engineering assignments.

Ability to perceive mechanical, physical and spatial relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
