SURVEYOR 1

DEFINITION: This is advanced technical work in supervising a group of survey corps engaged in engineering surveys to collect, record and plot data for various engineering, or map-making purposes.

An employee in this class is responsible for planning and coordinating the work of survey corps engaged in determining the exact location and measurement of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours of the earth’s surface to secure, record and plot data used for construction, map- making, land valuation, mining or other purposes. Emphasis is placed on making effective use of available survey corps members, expediting of priority surveys, and resolving difficult or unusual field problems. Work is assigned with general instructions and priorities by an administrative or professional supervisor and reviewed for effective and timely completion of surveys.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans and coordinates the activities of survey corps engaged in all types of conventional surveying activities including preliminary, construction, and final surveys.

Compiles data from Court House records and other legal, technical and professional sources to resolve any discrepancies related to property lines, easements, rights-of-way, or any problems related to land surveying throughout the Commonwealth.

Surveys and calculates earth and rock quantities by standard engineering methods, for determining payment of contracts.

Preparation, writing or rewriting of deed descriptions for clarity and accuracy.

Reviews the work of subordinate technicians to evaluate performance and to assist on complex or unusual problems.

Supervises surveys which involve unusual or difficult problems.

Consults with appropriate engineering employees to resolve difficult or unusual problems of an engineering nature.

Attends pre-construction conferences to assist in reviewing surveying activities related to proposed construction.

Performs related work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the surveying principles and methods used in determining the exact location and measurements of points or areas.

Knowledge of basic algebra, basic trigonometry, and plane geometry.

Knowledge of the engineering principles and practices applied to the design and construction of roads and other structures.

Knowledge of the purpose and use of advanced, state-of-the-art surveying instruments.

Knowledge of professional surveying principles and practices applied in property and legal work.

Skill in the use and adjustment of survey instruments, techniques and materials used in surveying.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of employees engaged in surveying activities.

Ability to perform the algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations applied to engineering surveying.

Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and Court House and legal documents related to property lines, easements and rights-of-way.

Ability to instruct others in the techniques of engineering surveying.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, superiors, and property owners.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Sufficient physical stamina to work under adverse weather conditions and on hazardous terrain.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Surveyor Technician Supervisor;

Five years of responsible surveying work, including one year as a chief of party of a wide variety of surveying assignments; and graduation from high school. An Associate Degree in surveying or engineering technology may be substituted for one year of non-specialized experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a registered surveyor’s license as issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, or possession of a registered surveyor’s license obtained in another public jurisdiction under requirements which are at least equal to those of Pennsylvania.
