ELECTRICAL ENGINEER 1
DEFINITION: This is professional electrical engineering work.
Employees in this job design and review engineering designs for components of electrical systems and routine complete electrical systems; review designs for conformity to electrical engineering standards, agency rules and regulations, and safety laws and codes; and coordinates the electrical engineering project with other architectural and engineering disciplines. Assignments are given in project form, and are reviewed upon completion for compliance with engineering principles, codes, laws and regulations by a professional supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Designs and reviews construction drawings for components of electrical systems to insure conformity to electrical engineering standards, agency rules and regulations, and safety laws, and codes.
Creates design drawings, details, and schedules for component parts or routine electrical systems for Commonwealth-owned or leased buildings.
Uses Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to create design drawings for component parts or routine electrical systems.
Inspects, investigates and resolves electrical system problems for compliance with contract specifications, national and state safety codes, and engineering soundness.
Determines required wire and electric panel sizes for an electrical distribution system.
Reviews permit applications for installation of sub-stations, and related electrical distribution facilities.
Reviews applications from land developers for variances from Public Utility Commission (PUC) regulations requiring underground electrical service.
Investigates and resolves consumer electrical system complaints against electric utility companies.
Reviews construction drawings for installation of traffic signals, electrical distribution systems, sub-stations and similar appurtenances.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering pertaining to the development of drawings and specifications for components of such electrical projects as building and highway illumination, primary and secondary power distribution systems, temperature controls, motor controls, and communication systems.
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of electrical construction cost estimating.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical system construction and construction inspection, including the testing of circuits and control systems.
Knowledge of the standard reference sources regarding the costs, principal applications, and characteristics of materials, fixtures, and equipment used in the design and construction of electrical engineering projects.
Ability to solve engineering problems using algebra, plane and solid geometry, and plane trigonometry.
Ability to create design drawings, details, and schedules; assemble specifications; and integrate project components into a complete electrical engineering system.
Ability to interpret mechanical and structural engineering and architectural drawings as they relate to building electrical systems.
Ability to interpret, and apply federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and standards pertaining to electrical engineering projects.
Ability to interpret inspection and testing reports; and prepare field investigation reports to insure conformance with project standards.
Ability to operate a micro-station Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system during the preparation of drawings for electrical systems.
Ability to read, write, and communicate orally in English.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, contractors, government officials, and the general public.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Successful completion of the training program for an Electrical Engineer Trainee;
or
One year of professional electrical engineering experience which required work on any structural electrical system; and a Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering;
or
One year of professional electrical engineering experience which required work on any structural electrical system, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid driver’s license.
