MECHANICAL ENGINEER 1

DEFINITION: This is professional mechanical engineering work.

Employees in this job design and review engineering designs for components of mechanical systems and routine mechanical systems. Work involves designing or reviewing designs for heating, plumbing, air-conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation and other mechanical systems; and coordinating the engineering project with other architectural or engineering disciplines. Assignments are given in project form, and are reviewed upon completion for compliance with engineering principles, codes, laws, and regulations by a professional supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Designs and reviews construction drawings for installation of heating, plumbing, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning, and other mechanical systems.

Creates design drawings, details, and schedules for component parts or routine mechanical systems for Commonwealth-owned or leased buildings.

Uses Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to create design drawings for component parts or routine mechanical systems.

Inspects, investigates and resolves construction problems for mechanical systems for compliance with contract specifications, safety codes, and engineering soundness.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles of mechanical engineering pertaining to the development of drawings and specifications for components or routine mechanical systems such as internal water supply and other plumbing, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related mechanical systems.

Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of construction cost estimating.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical systems construction and inspection.

Knowledge of the standard reference sources regarding the costs, principal applications, and characteristics of materials, fixtures, and equipment used in the design and construction of mechanical engineering projects.

Ability to apply the principles and practices of mechanical engineering pertaining to the design and review of drawings and specifications as they relate to mechanical engineering projects.

Ability to solve mechanical engineering problems using algebra, plane and solid geometry, and plane trigonometry.

Ability to create design drawings, details, and schedules; assemble specifications; and integrate project components into a complete mechanical engineering system.

Ability to interpret electrical and structural engineering and architectural drawings and specifications as they relate to building mechanical systems.

Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and standards to building mechanical systems.

Ability to interpret inspection and testing reports; and prepare field investigation reports to insure conformance with project standards.

Ability to operate a micro-station Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system during the preparation of drawings for mechanical building systems.

Ability to read, write, and communicate orally in English.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, contractors, government officials, and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Successful completion of the training program for a Mechanical Engineer Trainee;

or

One year of professional mechanical engineering experience which required work on any structural mechanical system, and a Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering;

or

One year of professional mechanical engineering experience which required work on any structural mechanical system, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid driver’s license.
