CHEMISTRY TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is technical work involving chemical procedures in a scientific laboratory.

An employee in this job prepares chemical samples, laboratory supplies, and equipment used for chemical or biochemical analysis. Work involves mixing chemical reagents and solutions, conducting standardized quality assurance tests, maintaining chain of custody and supply inventories, and calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment and instruments. Work also involves isolating and extracting matter from forensic casework or environmental samples for professional analysis. Work is supportive and preparatory to the performance of sample analysis by a forensic scientist or chemist. Work may also include conducting standardized chemical tests where professional analysis of test results is not required. Work is performed under the general supervision of a
professional employee who assigns and reviews work for quality, completeness, technical merit, and compliance with laboratory policies and standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Receives and secures laboratory samples and maintains and documents chain of custody records.

Organizes and prepares laboratory samples for professional chemical or biochemical analysis by transferring the samples from secure storage to scientific equipment and instrumentation.

Isolates and extracts matter from laboratory samples using standardized and automated techniques and instrumentation.

Mixes chemicals to create standard solutions and reagents.

Cleans, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment and instruments.

Conducts standardized quality assurance tests of solutions, reagents, equipment, and instrumentation.

Orders and maintains inventories of chemicals, laboratory supplies, and scientific equipment.

Secures chemical or biochemical waste for disposal.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry.

Knowledge of chemical and physical laboratory equipment and materials.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory safety.

Knowledge of the methods and practices of samples collection and preservation.

Knowledge of the mathematical applications of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to effectively communicate orally.

Ability to effectively communicate in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Completion of 60 college credits including nine credits in chemistry.
