MATERIALS TECHNICIAN 1
DEFINITION: This is technical work in the fabrication and maintenance of electrical and mechanical testing equipment and in the physical, chemical and mechanical testing of construction and maintenance materials or soils samples.
An employee in this class is responsible for repairing and calibrating testing equipment and for conducting routine tests of construction materials. Work involves performing tests which can be accomplished through the application of routine and well-established testing procedures. Work is assigned by a technical
supervisor who provides assistance with problems encountered and reviews work for technical quality and accuracy of test results.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Performs a variety of standard testing duties associated with the chemical analysis and physical testing of cements, paints, metals, salts, and related materials.
Performs soils tests such as direct shear, tri-axial shear, consolidation, permeability, and California Bearing Ratio.
Performs research tests on asphalt cement to determine components or percentage combinations of components responsible for deterioration and wear.
Improvises procedures for tests when standard procedures cannot be used with guidance form a higher level technician or professional.
Performs experimental tests for research purposes or to develop new or improved testing methods and procedures.
Repairs electrical and mechanical laboratory equipment; tests equipment and makes necessary calibrations to assurance equipment is functioning properly; and assists in the modification and fabrication of testing apparatus for special testing requirements.
Maintains records of test data and prepares reports on tests conducted.
Performs national proficiency sample testing for AMRL or CCRL evaluation of lab testing accuracy.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of algebra, inorganic chemistry, physics, and basic electronics, as required.
Knowledge of the properties and more complex tests of construction materials.
Knowledge of the techniques used in lifting samples for testing.
Knowledge of the standard types and uses of electrical and mechanical equipment used in the repair of laboratory equipment for construction materials.
Knowledge of reference materials for the proper interpretation of test standards and specifications.
Ability to use complex construction materials testing and repair equipment.
Ability to interpret technical literature and references on standards, specifications, and testing materials.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive summary test reports.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as a
Technical Assistant.

One year of experience in the testing of materials used in highway, bridge, building, hydraulic or similar construction projects and graduation from high school.
or
An Associate's Degree in a civil engineering technology or closely related field.
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
