JOB TITLE: CORRECTIONS SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

DEFINITION: This is professional supervisory and administrative education work at a state correctional facility.
An employee in this job directs and administers a school within a state correctional facility. Work involves planning objectives and curricula for educational programs, and directing the implementation of all program rules, regulations, and policies. Work includes scheduling classes, administering the General Educational Development (GED) program, and evaluating purchase requests against educational budgets. Supervision is exercised over professional educators. Work is performed independently and reviewed by an administrative supervisor for adherence to educational standards and established policies and procedures, and for attainment of program objectives.

• Plans and directs the implementation of curriculum for adult basic education or secondary education programs, vocational education programs, and library services to meet the individual needs of inmates in a state correctional facility.
• Ensures that special education programs are available to inmates with impaired learning ability.
• Schedules classes, graduation ceremonies, extra-curricular activities, and other educational events for students.
• Prepares the annual Planned Education Program, which outlines the programmatic and fiscal components of the education programs.
• Serves as Chief GED Examiner, and issues GED diplomas in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
• Evaluates educational training and certification needs of subordinates.
• Confers with higher-level administrators on educational problems or other issues in their department.
• Evaluates educational budgets to requisition equipment, supplies, and instructional materials.
• Assists in implementing post-secondary programs utilizing PELL funding.
• Travels to attend hearings, meetings, and trainings.
• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.
• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration.
• Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods of teaching.
• Knowledge of the methods used to design curricula, course outlines, lesson plans, and individual learning plans.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• Four years of professional educational experience, including three years as a classroom teacher or education counselor in a public school, licensed private school, or an adult correctional education program approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections;
or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes three years of professional educational experience as a classroom teacher or education counselor in a public school, licensed private school, or an adult correctional education program approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Certain employees who are assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility must possess a valid and active Administrative (Principal K-12), Administrative I (Principal K-12), or Administrative II (Principal K-12) certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) or must be eligible for an Emergency Permit in the area of Principal or Administrative Provisional I certification in the area of Principal issued by the PDE.
• Employees hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit in the area of Principal or Administrative Provisional I certification in the area of Principal must obtain a valid and active Administrative I (Principal K-12) certification in accordance with PDE guidelines.
