LIBRARY HELPER

DEFINITION: This is routine library work in the performance of clerical or clerical manual duties in a library.

An employee in this class is responsible for the performance of routine clerical duties in a library or routine clerical work which frequently requires the employee to perform unskilled manual duties associated with the movement of library holdings, equipment and supplies. Work includes enforcing library rules and regulations. Work is generally performed in accordance with well established procedures and is subject to frequent review by a superior through observation of performance and results obtained.

EXAMPLE OF WORK PERFORMED: Performs clerical duties relating to the care and circulation of all types of library material; pastes labels and covers on books; files cards, maps and documents.

Shelves books and other materials and does shelf reading performs simple book mending.

Retrieves, packs and refiles audio-visual materials and prepare them for mailing; retrieves books or other materials required by library users.

Moves heavy carts of books; shifts groups of books as required by crowding; moves mail, furniture, boxes and other freight; makes deliveries, unloads trucks, unpacks boxes of books and other freight.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of correct English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and to learn related clerical and library tasks of moderate complexity within a reasonable time.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and with the public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Any combination of experience and training which afforded the applicant an opportunity to gain the above listed knowledges, skills and abilities.
