LIBRARY ASSISTANT 1
DEFINITION: This is library-clerical work involving moderately complex work methods and problems.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of moderately complex clerical duties involved in the acquisition, circulation, and maintenance of library holdings. Work involves the application of a variety of clerical procedures in the purchasing, accessioning, preparation for circulation, and maintenance of library collections and the preparation of reports of library activity and patron use. Work also involves assisting library patrons in the use of library facilities and locating library materials. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a clerical or professional supervisor, but duties are performed with increasing independence as experience is gained.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Prepares purchases documents for books, magazines, and manuscripts to be added to the library.
Accessions, assists in the cataloging, and prepares new acquisitions for shelving and circulation.
Maintains circulation records, charges library holding to patrons, prepares notices of overdue books, registers new patrons and assists patrons in locating library
material or refers patrons to proper person for reader guidance and service.
Prepares books and periodicals for binding, writes for missing issues, prepares bindery orders, and inspects returned materials.
Gathers, clips, sorts, and files miscellaneous materials in developing and maintaining reference files.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of correct English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
Knowledge of modern library techniques, procedures, and working tools used in accessing, cataloging, circulating and maintaining library materials.
Skill in the performance of clerical and manipulative tasks.
Ability to apply library methods and principles in acquiring, circulation, and providing limited patron services.
Ability to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and with the public.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of library- clerical experience or one year of experience in clerical, typing or secretarial work. One year of appropriate formal post-high school training may be substituted for the required experience.
