LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is supervisory or advanced technical library work.

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising a library function including purchasing, accessioning, classifying, and cataloging or circulation, inter-library loan, and reader services in a large departmental or institutional library. Work involves assisting library patrons in locating reading and research materials. Work may involve the preparation of subject bibliographies and may include extensive abstracting of bibliography material or library holdings. In the absence of supervisory duties an employe in this class is responsible for the maintenance and operations of a moderate- size departmental or institutional library including the purchasing, cataloging, circulation, and provision of reader services. Work involves assisting departmental personnel in locating source material and advising departmental or institutional personnel of methods to improve library services and the library acquisitions needed to strengthen the library collection. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative or professional superior and is reviewed through observation, conferences, and reports for adherence to library standards, departmental policy, and effectiveness of program.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Maintains and operates a moderate-size departmental or institutional library by purchasing, cataloging, circulating, and providing library and reader services.

Supervises the operation of the purchasing and cataloging, or circulation and reader services section of a large departmental or institutional library.

Supervises the provision of or provides reader services and helps inmates and patients at state institutions which may include some teaching of library techniques, taking reading materials to wards and cells where inmates and patients are allowed only limited movement, and assisting library patrons in finding appropriate materials to answer questions.

Prepares and maintains subject bibliographies requested by library patrons; prepares extensive abstracts of bibliography and library materials.

Performs related work and required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of library techniques, procedures, and working tools used in accessioning, cataloging, circulating, and maintaining library materials.

Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in bibliography preparation and the use of library research materials.

Knowledge of reader comprehension and interest levels of library patrons.

Skill in the application of the techniques and procedures used in cataloging.

Ability to apply library methods and principles in circulation and providing reader services.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and the public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Four years of library-clerical work including two years of advanced library clerical work comparable to the Library Assistant II, and graduation from high school.
