LIBRARIAN SUPERVISOR 1
DEFINITION: This is supervisory professional library work in a departmental or institutional library or in the State Library.
An employee in this class is responsible for the administration of a major departmental or institutional library requiring considerable knowledge of agency programs or for supervision of a specialized unit in the State Library or at a state college or university library. Employees are responsible for supervising professional and para-professional and/or clerical library personnel in providing information and library services to agency and departmental staff, legislative staff, public and private groups and/or the general public. Work involves assigning work to and reviewing the work of subordinate staff, providing training and direction in improving work effectiveness and
participating in the appointment and disciplinary process as supervisor. Work is performed under the general direction of a professional or administrative supervisor and is reviewed for compliance with departmental policies and correct library procedures through conferences and evaluation of results.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Performs advanced supervisory and specialized work in cataloging, classifying, or other library tasks related to the processing of books, periodicals, pamphlets and similar materials.
Administers a major departmental or institutional library program and supervises the activities of the library.
Directs and supervises a specialized section of the State Library or a state college library which provides complex library services to patrons.
Coordinates and supervises the operation of a number of small specialized units in the State Library or at a state college.
Conducts and participates in training activities for professional, technical and clerical personnel in current library procedures.
Reviews current methods used in order to improve the library program.
Performs reference work requiring difficult and intensive research and summarizes findings in technical reports.
Maintains collections of books by recommending acquisition, retiring worn and obsolete material and selecting materials for rebinding or microfilming.
Prepares correspondence requesting library information.
Prepares articles for publication on library activities.
Prepares specialized book lists and bibliographies by reviewing and extracting information from technical publications on departmental program functions or topics of special interest and disseminates such information to staff personnel.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, and techniques in library science.
Considerable knowledge of sources and procedures used in reference and bibliographic research.
Considerable knowledge of reader interest levels in relation to library patrons.
Some knowledge of the principles of supervision and administration.
Ability to apply library science principles and techniques to improve library services.
Ability to use and explain library facilities, including card catalogs and other reference aids.
Ability to plan and supervise the operation of a departmental or institutional library.
Ability to perform intensive research in an area of library science and present findings in reports.
Ability to schedule and supervise the work of professional and non-professional personnel.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience in professional library work and a master's degree in library science;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
