JOB TITLE: ADULT BASIC EDUCATION TEACHER, CORRECTION EDUCATION

JOB CODE: 25900

DEFINITION: This is professional education work in providing adult basic education instruction to inmates at a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job develops and adapts curriculum, course outlines, and lesson plans to meet the educational needs of inmates at state correctional facilities. Work involves instructing inmates in a variety of general academic and remedial subjects, such as basic math, reading, English, science, social studies, language arts, writing, and similar skills. Work includes utilizing a variety of basic instructional and remedial techniques to develop the basic learning abilities of inmates through the use of group and individualized instructional approaches; diagnosing and evaluating inmate potential, achievement, and progress by administering standardized and teacher constructed tests and grading classroom and homework assignments; monitoring inmate behavior to ensure an effective learning environment in the classroom; maintaining security of classroom materials; and completing records, reports, and forms related to the operation of classes and the evaluation of inmate performance. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrator or principal and is reviewed through conferences and observation for achievement of educational objectives.

• Prepares instructional objectives that will achieve the goals of the Planned Educational Program.

• Prepares lesson plans specifying content and activities to be covered, sequence of instruction, materials needed, and standards for lesson accomplishment.

• Prepares instructional aids and materials for use in the classroom.

• Reviews and recommends tests, study guides, workbooks, and other learning materials for use in the classroom.

• Prepares assessments and analyzes the information gathered to determine inmate capabilities and readiness for learning.

• Instructs inmates on the content of a variety of subjects.

• Trains and supervises inmates as tutorial assistants.

• Selects and employs a variety of teaching techniques and approaches in presenting subject matter to a group of inmates or individual inmates.

• Prepares and administers quizzes, tests, and exercises.

• Analyzes inmates’ achievement in class using tests and other evaluative information to identify the strengths and learning needs of individual inmates.

• Establishes classroom rules and procedures and maintains order in class.

• Completes reports and maintains records on inventory assigned to the inmates, classroom, and the school.

• Maintains inmate attendance and learning records.

• Prepares requests for equipment, materials, and supplies.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods used to design curricula, course outlines, lesson plans, and individual learning plans.

• Knowledge of individual and group behavior.

• Knowledge of teaching principles and practices.

• Knowledge of course planning as applied to academic education.

• Knowledge of the administration, scoring, and interpretation of academic diagnostic, aptitude, and achievement tests.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• A bachelor's degree in education which includes or is supplemented by successful completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum;

or

• Four years of paraprofessional experience assisting educational staff in a classroom setting that includes or is supplemented by one year of experience providing classroom instruction or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes or is supplemented by completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum, one year of experience providing classroom instruction, or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions assigned to an institution that houses state mandated school-age students require a valid and active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by then Pennsylvania Department of Education. When no candidates possess the named certifications, the selected candidate must be eligible for an Emergency Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that is appropriate to the position.

• Employees assigned to an institution that houses state mandated school-age students, and who were hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit, must obtain a valid and active Instructional Level 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
