MUSEUM EDUCATOR 2

DEFINITION: This is full professional museum-related educational work.

An employee in this class performs public educational and interpretive work of a full professional nature in presenting museum educational programs consisting of classroom study courses, lectures, planetarium shows, traveling exhibits, audio-visual displays, and similar instructional programs based upon museum and field site collections and activities, and museum-related research activities. Work involves devising class and program schedules, preparing lesson plans, scripts, or other methods of presentation, and actually presenting the material through lectures, classroom instruction, or other selected techniques. Work includes the conduct of in-depth research to develop information about museum collections, exhibits, and related topics for use in museum educational and informational activities. Work also involves establishing and maintaining contacts and coordinating activities schedules with schools, local historical societies and promotional groups, and other groups and individuals concerned with museum and field site educational and informational programs. Work includes assisting in the training of volunteers and part-time employees engaged in museum educational and informational activities. Work is performed with wide latitude for professional judgment, subject to review and evaluation of methods and results by the supervisor of the Education Section.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans and coordinates schedule of classes, lectures, traveling exhibits, planetarium shows, and other educational and interpretive activities related to museum and field site collections and programs; prepares lesson plans; selects components for audio-visual displays; conducts classes, delivers lectures, augments audio-visual presentations with commentaries, and otherwise presents material to the public or groups interested in special topics.

Creates, writes, and produces programs for school groups and the general public; writes scripts for "live" and taped shows; revises shows to keep abreast of constant changes in subject matter in fields represented in the museum; repairs and maintains planetarium equipment; creates special effects for shows.

Establishes master schedule for traveling exhibits plans, researches, and designs Mobile Museum displays and exhibits; presents material, employing visual and audio-visual aids, tapes, and other instructional devices and techniques; oversees maintenance and operation of Mobile Museum.

Prepares reports of educational and interpretive activities, including evaluation of impact and success of presentations.

Trains volunteer and part-time assistants engaged in museum educational and interpretive activities.

Performs in-depth research as necessary in preparing educational and interpretive presentations.

Writes articles devises star charts, composes correspondence related to subjects matter topics, and performs a variety of related writing and instructional tasks.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques of education as they relate to museum and historic site educational and interpretive activities directed to the general public.

Knowledge of the resources, operating characteristics and policies, and objectives of the state's museums and historic sites.

Knowledge of the full range of tangible objects and research methods applicable to developing concerning museum and field site resources and activities for use in educational and interpretive programs based on museum collections.

Skill in preparing lessons or presentations plans, including effective use of objects and audio-visual aids, and in presenting material to classes or the public through classroom instruction, lectures, or similar methods.

Skill in performing in-depth research related to museum and field site resources and characteristics.

Skill in planning exhibits, and similar displays related to educational activities.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private groups and individuals concerned with museum and field site educational and interpretive programs.

Ability to compose correspondence and articles, scripts and story lines for presentations, and other publicity material to arouse public interest in educational and interpretive programs.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Museum Educator 1.
