CUSTODIAL GUIDE 1

DEFINITION: This is routine work in maintaining and guarding state museums and parks, and conducting visitors on guided tours.

Employees in this class conduct visitors through state museums and parks and explain points and objects of interest. Work includes guarding valuable property of historical significance and may include cleaning buildings and exhibits maintaining grounds and doing minor repair and maintenance work. Work may also include driving vehicles off-site, or from one area of a site to another to perform the duties of the position. Independence in the work is exercised after procedures and policies are established, and supervision is received from a higher level superior who periodically inspects the establishment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Escorts visitors through museums and parks and explain exhibits and points of interest.

Records registration and collects fees.

Guards buildings and does general maintenance work.

Cleans buildings and does general maintenance work.

Maintains grounds by mowing and trimming grass, and may plant shrubs, flowers and trees.

Drives a car or small truck to various areas of the historic site, or off-site to pick up supplies.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the standard practices and equipment common to security duties.

Knowledge of the standard methods of reporting disturbances and fires.

Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment ordinarily employeed in buildings and grounds cleaning and maintenance.

Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks without immediate supervision.

Ability to meet the public tactfully, courteously, and effectively.

Ability to address groups effectively.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work long periods while standing.

Alertness and good judgment in noticing and reporting unusual situations.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Six months of experience in security or buildings and grounds maintenance work; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a standard high school;

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Some positions in this classification may be required to possess a valid Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
