JOB TITLE: CHIEF MATE, FLAGSHIP NIAGARA

JOB CODE: 27630

DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in the operation of the United States Brig Niagara.

The employee in this job serves as the executive officer of the United States Brig Niagara and oversees the operation and maintenance of the vessel. Work includes supervising the crew in the operation and maintenance of the ship and its systems; training the crew and volunteers; developing annual, monthly, and daily maintenance plans; and preparing maintenance budgets and material purchasing specifications for the Captain’s approval. Work involves assuming command of the ship in the absence or incapacity of the Captain. Oversight may be exercised over volunteers. Work is performed under the general direction of the Captain, Flagship Niagara and is reviewed through observation, conferences, and written reports for the effective attainment of goals and objectives.

• Assumes command of the ship in the absence or incapacity of the Captain.

• Serves as the watch officer on deck when the ship is underway.

• Supervises a crew responsible for deck operations and maintenance activities.

• Directs the crew at sail stations while underway.

• Trains the crew and volunteers, including scheduling and conducting safety drills, demonstrating various tasks, and incorporating available texts and articles into training.

• Develops and edits the crew handbook to provide instructional guidance and ensure consistency in training and safety procedures.

• Prepares written reports on the ship’s condition and notifies the Captain of issues requiring attention.

• Maintains the ship’s logbooks.

• Leads presentations on maritime history and the United States Brig Niagara’s role in the War of 1812.

• Represents the Commonwealth as a public relations liaison to the media, dignitaries, and the public.

• Preforms the full range of supervisory duties.

• The employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of large, square-rigged auxiliary sail vessels and their operation.

• Knowledge of the maintenance of wooden ships and traditional rigging.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to write reports and provide recommendations regarding the ship and its operations.

• Ability to conduct tours and speak effectively before large groups.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Five years of experience on a traditionally rigged sailing vessel serving as an officer licensed by the United States Coast Guard.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• This position requires possession of a Master of 200 or greater tons, Near Coastal with Auxiliary Sail endorsement or a Master of 200 or greater tons, Oceans with Auxiliary Sail endorsement, issued by the United States Coast Guard.
