JOB TITLE: RESIDENTIAL SERVICES AIDE SUPERVISOR

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Residential Services Aide job series describes work in providing non-professional health care services to individuals residing at state-operated facilities.

DEFINITION: This is non-professional supervisory work overseeing the provision of health care services for individuals with intellectual disabilities to improve their daily living functions in a Department of Human Services (DHS) facility.

An employee in this job supervises Residential Services Aides who assist individuals residing in one large or several small living areas in carrying out their daily-living, self-help, and other residential activities designed to maximize their capabilities. Work also includes inspecting housekeeping functions performed by individuals to ensure living areas are clean and safe, making daily rounds of assigned living areas, and providing guidance on assignments to subordinate staff. Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor who reviews results through observation, reports, and conferences.

• Monitors subordinates in assisting individuals in completing their daily-living, self-help, and other activities as outlined in their individualized treatment plans under the guidance of professional staff.

• Monitors and instructs subordinates in how to feed, dress, transport, and perform other health care tasks for individuals.

• Observes and reports individuals’ progress in achieving their treatment plan goals to interdisciplinary team members.

• Monitors subordinates in their inspection of housekeeping functions performed by individuals for cleanliness and safety.

• Observes and reports on individuals’ participation in their therapeutic activities to professional therapeutic staff.

• Provides classroom instruction and on-the-job training for Aide Trainees.

• Informs subordinate staff of reported behavioral problems and issues involving individuals.

• Instructs subordinates to report and document individuals’ behavioral problems.

• Instructs and provides guidance to subordinates on how to support individuals to resolve their problems associated with group living through settlements of disagreements.

• Intervenes to defuse escalating interpersonal conflicts and calms individuals when necessary.

• Notifies an administrative supervisor for assistance during emergencies.

• Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings by providing observational feedback on individuals’ behavior to professional treatment staff.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of non-professional health care services designed to improve the ability of individuals to perform daily living activities.

• Knowledge of group and individual behavior.

• Ability to read and interpret written materials.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• Two years as a Residential Services Aide;

or

• Two years of paid experience performing direct care and habilitative program services for individuals with a developmental disability;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
