SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND HEARING SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION: This is professional work of an administrative, supervisory and coordinative nature in the field of speech, language and hearing.
An employee in this class plans, organizes, directs and coordinates a speech, language and hearing program at a state operated facility. As program director, work entails total responsibility for the provision of diagnostic and treatment services and research in the field of auditory and speech, language and related disabilities. As discipline coordinator at an intellectual disability center, the employee supervises and provides technical direction to speech, language and hearing specialists' assigned to the units and advises unit program managers on auditory and speech, language and related disability program services, goals and objectives. Technical guidance and direction is exercised over a staff of lower level professional and non-professional personnel. Work is performed under the general direction of a professional or administrative supervisor who reviews program effectiveness through consultation and reports.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the speech, language and hearing program at a state operated facility.
Supervises and reviews the work of professional and non- professional staff engaged in the clinical practical of communicology, including diagnostic and remedial treatment.
Develops goals and objectives and advises intellectual disability program managers on the speech, language and hearing discipline accreditation/certification standards, clients progress in meeting established goals and discipline training needs for client's inter-disciplinary treatment team staff.
Plans, directs or conducts an in-service training program for speech, language and hearing personnel which includes training and supervision of non-professional aides.
Directs a research program in speech, language and hearing.
Maintains an affiliation with an academic institution having students in speech, language and hearing specialties and conducts a training program for such students.
Confers with administrative supervisors concerning objectives and policies of the speech, language and hearing program.
Directs and participates in providing diagnostic, evaluative, and therapeutic services to clients/patients having communication disabilities.
Participates in inter-departmental staff meetings to discuss and evaluate progress in the habilitation/rehabilitation of patients/clients.
Consults with pediatricians, otologists, orthodontists, and physicians to furnish diagnostic evaluations of speech, language and hearing disorders based on independent study of individual cases.
Evaluates case histories and etiological data and makes referrals to other services where warranted.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of approved principles, methods, techniques, and procedures used in individual and group treatment of speech, language and audiological disabilities and of related behavioral problems.
Knowledge of speech, language and audiological disabilities, their treatment, and effects upon the individual as related to his social psychological, and vocational environment.
Knowledge of the principles of supervision and administration and of methods and techniques of staff training.
Knowledge of research principles and practices as applied to the field of speech, language, hearing and related disabilities.
Ability to plan, organize, direct and coordinate the speech, language and hearing program at a state operated facility.
Ability to provide technical direction, supervision and coordination for the work of professional and non-professional personnel.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients/patients, their families, professional staff, and other colleagues.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of professional experience in the field of communicology, and completion of all requirements for a master's degree, excluding a thesis, in the field of communicology or a related area, including or supplemented by not less than 24 credit hours in speech pathology and/or audiology earned at either the graduate or undergraduate level. Additional appropriate graduate work may be substituted for the required experience to a maximum of one year.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Possession of a certificate of clinical competence from the Council of Professional Standards of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and/or licensure as required by state law or regulation for professional employment in public schools or approved private schools.
