CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is technical laboratory work in the performance of a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests.

An employee in this class performs a variety of standardized analytical tests and examinations to determine the chemical, physical, or biological nature of clinical laboratory specimens. Work involves utilizing standardized analytical chemical, biological, or physical testing procedures in the examination and analysis of laboratory samples. Work is reviewed by a technical or professional supervisor upon completion and during progress for adherence to prescribed procedures and for the technical accuracy of results.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Makes routine chemical analyses of urine specimens; tests urine for color, specific gravity, albumen, and sugar.

Prepares direct smears of sputum and of pleural and spinal fluids, and cultures of various specimens, and examines for presence of tubercle bacilli.

Prepares standard reagents and solutions.

Draws blood from patients/residents in order to perform hematological examinations.

Performs hematological examinations, making complete blood counts, smears for differential count, and blood grouping.

Keeps records of laboratory examinations and analyses performed.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques of clinical laboratory testing.

Knowledge of the methods and procedures of a variety of standardized chemical and biological laboratory tests.

Knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry and biology as related to clinical laboratory testing.

Skill in clinical laboratory manipulative techniques including, but not limited to, venipuncture and gastric washings.

Ability to perform tests and remain within specified parameters of quality control limitations as designated by the laboratory supervisor.

Ability to perform assigned tasks according to exactly prescribed procedures, and to make accurate and precise observations of test results.

Ability to perform calculations involving the application of basic mathematics.

Ability to prepare accurate records of laboratory results.

Eyesight sufficiently strong to permit extended microscopic work; and normal color perception.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Completion of training approved by the American Medical Association as a Certified Laboratory Assistant.
