MICROBIOLOGIST 1

DEFINITION: This is professional work in the field of microbiology in a base laboratory or mobile laboratory setting.

An employee in this job performs a variety of standardized microbiological or biomedical analyses of biological or environmental samples. Work  includes preparing reagents, performing test procedures, reporting results and evaluating standardized quality control results associated with standardized procedures in order to determine the presence, absence or concentration of analytes or infectious agents. Work is differentiated from the higher level by the responsibility for performing more standardized testing and the lack of responsibility for independently researching the development of new test methods and procedures. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through documentation reviews, results of quality control samples and direct observation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Performs microscopic examinations or other test methods on laboratory samples to determine the presence, identity and quantity of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses and other microorganisms in any phase of their development.

Assists a higher-level microbiologist in the performance of specialized microbiological techniques.

Performs diagnostic technical work in parasitology, serology, pathology, bacteriology, virology and other specialized phases of microbiology.

Conducts bacteriological surveys at sites where food or water is supplied or processed.

Conducts required quality assurance and quality control procedures to ensure reagents, media, apparatus and processes meet required performance standards.

Generates reports of sample results following standardized reporting criteria.

Maintains analytical data and other documentation required by regulatory agencies.

Provides cross training to other laboratory personnel.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of principles and practices of microbiology and related fields.

Knowledge of modern laboratory methods, equipment and materials.

Knowledge of laboratory safety.

Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control principles and practices.

Ability to perform standard laboratory operations using safety equipment.

Ability to perform complex calculations to yield final results.

Ability to prepare scientifically accurate and thorough reports of work performed.

Ability to read.

Ability to effectively communicate orally.

Ability to effectively communicate in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to perform microbiological examinations and tests.

Ability to distinguish the color spectrum.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor’s degree in microbiology;

                                                                                                                                                                or

A bachelor’s degree that includes 20 credits in microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology or bacteriology and 12 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Certain positions will require possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Certain positions will require the successful completion of a background risk assessment check.
