SECRETARY, BOARD OF PHARMACY

DEFINITION: This is administrative professional work in administering the Pharmacy Act and rules, regulations approved by the State Board of Pharmacy.

The employee in this class is responsible for providing administrative staff support to the Board; providing liaison with the public, practicing pharmacists and support work units to ensure compliance in the areas of licensing and inspection. The employee serves as the primary resource for board-related information. General administrative direction is received from the Administrative Officer who reviews work for program effectiveness.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Provides liaison between the board and the Division of Law Enforcement in the training of inspectors responsible for inspecting pharmacies.

Coordinates the development of proposed legislation, rules and regulations.

Responds to information requests from the public, examination applicants, practicing pharmacists, and support work units.

Reviews and evaluates examination applicant's coursework and experience on exception applications in order to determine if required qualifications are met.

Recommends changes to ensure that the Pharmacy Act and Board Rules and Regulations are current with the standards of practice of the Pharmacy profession.

Recommends approval of educational programs and curriculum in the development and monitoring of Pharmacy Continuing Education within guidelines provided by the Board.

Develops, maintains, and have published a manual of laws, board rules and regulations pertaining to the practice of Pharmacy.

Provides guidance for the clerical supervisor on changes in board policies, rules, and regulations.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of State Pharmacy Law, rules and regulations as well as the Federal law that applies to the practice of Pharmacy.

Knowledge of the standards of practice for the Pharmacy profession.

Knowledge of educational and licensing requirements of the Pharmacy Board.

Ability to advise and recommend changes to the Board to ensure that rules and regulations are current and consistent with the State Pharmacy Act.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to learn administrative procedures.

Ability to assess educational programs against board standards.

Ability to gather, organize, and effectively convey information in written form as required by the Board.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to understand, explain, and coordinate enforcement of Pharmacy Act, rules and regulations.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Experience as a licensed pharmacist for the last five years.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a license to practice pharmacy as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.
