DENTAL TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the manufacture of dental prosthetic devices.

An employee in this class engages primarily in the manufacture of such dental prosthetic materials as crowns, bridges, orthodontic appliances, and the replacement and repair of dental restorations of the human mouth. Employees work under the direct supervision of a dentist and work is performed in accordance with standard techniques. Work is reviewed through periodic inspections, and observation of quality of finished work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Manufactures crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances; and repairs and replaces dental restorations wholly or in part.

Casts inlays and other dental artifices.

Makes muffles for porcelain furnaces and makes up materials used for crown, bridge, operative, prosthetic and orthodontic techniques.

Conducts classes in prosthetic techniques and routine clinical duties for dental assistance and other hospital or inmate personnel.

Keeps dental machines, instruments and other mechanical equipment in working order.

Sharpens and repairs instruments used in the dental surgery department including chisels, bars, forceps, pliers, and electrical apparatus.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the techniques, practices, and materials used in dental mechanical and laboratory work.

Knowledge of the field of dental prosthetics as related to the practical aspects of the construction of prosthetic devices.

Ability to instruct subordinates in the routine operation of dental clinic.

Ability to maintain a laboratory and laboratory storeroom and to keep adequate supply records.

Ability to perform a variety of dental-mechanical and other mechanical tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skill.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, associates, and superiors.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience in dental laboratory work; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a standard high school, supplemented by training in the manufacture of dental prosthetic devices; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
