JOB TITLE: DISEASE INTERVENTION SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Disease Intervention Specialist job series describes work in controlling communicable diseases.

DEFINITION: This is professional and supervisory public health work in the control and prevention of communicable diseases.

An employee in this job supervises, plans, and directs staff in the investigation of disease cases. Work involves monitoring staff assignments to ensure case investigations are performed timely in accordance with case investigation, contact tracing, and other relevant guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); and supervising staff who provide technical assistance to laboratories, health care facilities, and health care practitioners on appropriate disease control and prevention measures. Work includes collaborating with community and local health organizations to identify and implement disease prevention and control measures, and overseeing data collection and reporting on issues related to communicable or infectious diseases. Work is completed independently under an administrative supervisor and is reviewed for conformance to public health regulations and departmental policies and procedures.

• Supervises professional staff responsible for investigating disease cases and counseling infected individuals on appropriate health actions.

• Oversees the use of electronic disease surveillance systems and other sources to determine incidence of and exposure to communicable diseases, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted diseases.

• Oversees and coordinates client referrals to local medical providers for preventive health care or treatment, and manages and assigns cases to staff for investigation follow-up.

• Participates in developing goals and objectives as well as data collection and reporting methods related to case investigations that are subject federal grant requirements.

• Provides assistance and expertise in improving disease testing, treatment, and reporting to ensure they are conducted according to CDC guidelines.

• Coordinates public health information outreach in partnership with community groups.

• Reviews staff reports on individual client cases to ensure appropriate reporting and follow-up.

• Coordinates and directs the preparation and review of statistical reports on specific local disease outbreaks and communicates relevant information to community health agencies and organizations.

• Solicits participation from community organizations in outreach, education, and testing services for at-risk populations or geographic areas of high disease burden.

• Provides technical assistance to health care providers, community organizations, school staff, business leaders, and others through workshops, institutes, and public meetings to increase understanding and awareness of diseases.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of their subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of individual and group behavior.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• One year as a Disease Intervention Specialist (commonwealth title);

or

• Two years of professional experience performing outreach, investigation, or case management work in a social services, human services, public health, or health services program; and a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, behavioral sciences, or a related field;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• All positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
