CORRECTIONS ACTIVITIES MANAGER 1
DEFINITION:
This is professional and administrative work in providing a program of leisure time activities for inmates in State Correctional Institutions with an inmate population of 1 to 1,200, or serving as an assistant to a higher level activities manager in charge of the activities operation in State Correctional Institutions with an inmate population of over 1,200.
An employee in this job plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and schedules leisure time activities involving inmates at all levels of interest and ability in areas of sports, games, music, creative and performing arts, crafts, and social recreation. Work includes program assessment, participation in policy development in correlation with security regulations, and the supervision of Department of Corrections authorized inmate organizations. Programs are designed to motivate and provide opportunities for expression of inmate talents through individual and group participation, which may be of entertainment or therapeutic value or for avocational development. Work may be performed in the afternoon, evening, and on weekends. Work includes supervising Corrections Activities Specialists, inmate workers, and activity participants. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of an administrative superior, and is evaluated through conferences, reports, program effectiveness and for compliance with security regulations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Directs a program of leisure time activities in creative and performing arts, social recreation, music, crafts, athletics, and games.
Prepares requisitions for supplies and equipment and maintains Inmate General Welfare Fund records in accordance with guidelines established for the expenditure of appropriated and non-appropriated funds.
Coordinates and supervises Department of Corrections authorized inmate organizations.
Participates in the identification and development of individual interests and talents for recreational, avocational and for therapeutic purposes and develops activities programming geared to meet inmate needs, abilities, and interests.
Coordinates the scheduling of sporting events, games participation, and guest appearance of entertainers, lecturers, concerts, and performing groups, so as not to interfere with other services and programs.
Supervises inmate workers in the maintenance of equipment and indoor and outdoor recreational facilities.
Maintains records and prepares reports on inmate work performance and recommends changes in inmate pay.
Promotes community understanding, acceptance, and involvement in a variety of leisure time activities.
Prepares assessments of individual inmate's leisure time needs, interests, degree of participation, and other relevant information useful in the evaluation of the individual treatment plan.
Participates in searches of inmates, recreational and work areas for contraband, and ensures security of work area.
Assumes responsibility for the care, custody and control of assigned inmate workers and inmate activity participants.
Performs the full range of supervisory duties.
May participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.
Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the organization and administration of leisure time programs in a correctional facility encompassing games, creative and performing arts, social recreation, and athletics for all levels of skill, ability, and interests of participants.
Knowledge of individual and group behavior patterns.
Knowledge of facilities, equipment, and supplies required to implement a program of leisure time activities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience as a Corrections Activities Specialist;
or
Two years of experience in developing and conducting a variety of recreational activities, including one year in Corrections and one year of supervisory or lead work experience, and a bachelor's degree, with major course work in recreation and physical education;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
