DISABILITY ADJUDICATION ADMINISTRATOR
DEFINITION: This is administrative and managerial work in the field of disability claims adjudication.
An employee in this class is responsible for managing a disability claims adjudication branch office. Work involves planning and organizing a disabilities claims adjudication program for an assigned geographic are, directing the review and redetermination of claims decision appeals, and planning and implementing working procedures changes required by changes in statewide policy, laws, or case review by the courts. An important aspect of the work involves the integration of disabilities determination with other state, Federal, or local social services programs. Work includes maintaining a close liaison with the medical community to develop and maintain their awareness of the disabilities program and its requirements and constraints. The daily operations of the branch office are directed through subordinate managerial and supervisory staff and are reviewed for adherence to established policies, rules, and regulations and the effective utilization of available resources. Work is performed with considerable independence of action under general instructions from state administrators, and is reviewed through reports and conferences for conformance to policies and state and Federal regulations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Manages a branch office providing disability determination services to an assigned geographical area.
Interprets program objectives, policies, and procedures to medical and social resource agencies and personnel and the concerned public in the area, as well as to branch managerial and supervisory staff; evaluates the effectiveness of branch office operations.
Plans, conducts, and participates in orientation training courses and periodic inservice training programs.
Participates with state administrators in the development of statewide disability determination policies and procedures.
Participates in the promotion of programs through making speeches, writing articles, and preparing interpretive materials.
Prepares reports on the status and progress of work.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of disability claims determination.
Knowledge of Social Security and other Federal and state laws, regulations, and policies concerning disability programs.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of administration and supervision.
Knowledge of the methods and techniques of program interpretation and promotion.
Knowledge of physical and mental illnesses and impairments and their social and vocational implications.
Knowledge of employment practices and of skills, abilities, and physical demands of the more common occupations.
Knowledge of current labor agreements provisions which affect the management of an adjudicative office.
Skill in planning and supervising the work of others.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinate, other administrative officials, and the general public.
Skill in making clear and pertinent statements orally and in writing.
Ability to plan, organize, direct, and promote specialized programs.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Disability Adjudication Assistant Administrator;
or
Five years of experience in work involving medical and/or vocational and/or psychological evaluations, of which three years must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity in disability claims adjudication, and educational development to the bachelor's degree level;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which afforded the applicant the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.
