PROBATION AND PAROLE DEPUTY DISTRICT DIRECTOR

DEFINITION: This is responsible supervisory and administrative work assisting in the management of a large district of the state probation and parole system.

Employees in this class plan, organize, direct, and control the work of several subordinate professional, supervisory, and clerical staff in a large district parole office, assisting the district director manage highly complex and varied problems of administration and community program resource integration. Work involves assisting in the development of district policies and procedures in accordance with applicable law and Board of Probation and Parole policies, and directing parole supervision of clientele through subordinate supervisors. Work includes an element of physical danger in working with probation and parole violators. Work also includes deciding the nature and method of parole supervision to be exercised over parolees and probationers. Employees manage their units with independence, seeking clearance from the district director on district policy clarifications. General supervision is received from the district director with work being reviewed through conferences and submission of reports for conformance with Probation and Parole Board policies and regulations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assists in the management of a large district office through supervision of professional supervisors, parole agents, and clerical staff.

Manages day-to-day operations of the district office including supervision of staff, interpretation of policy, and review of parole hearing processes.

Provides training and guidance to supervisory staff on new policy, disciplinary actions, case management, and use and maintenance of state equipment.

Performs public contact and community liaison work such as meeting to explain agency policies and procedures to public officials, police agencies, courts, or other interes6ted parties.

Reviews and makes recommendations on equipment and manpower needs for the district.

Employees in this class may participate in the performance of their subordinates work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and methods of administration and employee supervision.

Knowledge of casework principles and methods.

Knowledge of principles and methods of probation and parole investigation and supervision.

Knowledge of agency policies and procedures.

Knowledge of current social, economic and health problems, as well as resources with special emphasis on factors relating to crime and delinquency.

Knowledge of modern principles of criminology and penology.

Knowledge of individual and group behavior with special emphasis on behavior deviations of persons who have been involved in delinquent or criminal activities.

Knowledge of principles and methods of in-service training.

Ability to plan and direct the work of others.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals, agencies, and the community.

Ability to make decisions on cases independently with mature judgment.

Ability to make clear and pertinent statements orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Parole Supervisor;

                                                                                                                                                                or

Four years of experience in probation or parole work, including one year in a supervisory capacity and a bachelor's degree;

                                                                                                                                                                or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which included one year of supervisory experience in probation or parole.
