INMATE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS SUPERVISOR, CORRECTIONS

DEFINITION: This is advanced administrative and supervisory work involving the review, evaluation and implementation of the Department of Corrections’ Inmate Classification and Assessment Systems within an assigned region.

An employee in this job is responsible for supervising the review, evaluation, implementation and training of institutional staff involving the Department of Corrections’ Inmate Classification and Assessment Systems. Work includes the review of institutional inmate transfer requests, petitions, classification summaries, and assessment instruments. Work also includes functioning as a team leader over staff responsible for conducting on-site institutional audits to determine compliance with the Department's Inmate Classification and Assessment Systems; developing and implementing classification and assessment policies; and training Department of Corrections staff concerning the proper use of the inmate classification system. Employees in this job supervise lower-level analysts. Work is assigned by an administrative supervisor and is reviewed through reports, meetings, and conferences.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Reviews and evaluates inmate transfer requests for completeness and recommends for approval or disapproval.

Reviews and evaluates inmate classification summaries and instruments for completeness and recommends for approval or disapproval.

Reviews, evaluates, approves or disapproves institutional classification and assessment override trends and adjusts as appropriate.

Determines the appropriateness of institutional placement based upon inmates’ needs assessments and custody levels.

Serves as team leader on Bureau of Inmate Services institutional compliance audits.

Reviews results of institutional audits and recommends changes and/or improvements.

Analyzes classification and assessment data in order to make recommendations and/or modifications to instruments, policies, and procedures.

Develops instruments to measure the overall quality and effectiveness of the Department’s inmate classification and assessment functions.

Evaluates assessment instruments, policies, and procedures to ensure they meet best practice standards.

Develops training materials and presents agency-wide training on inmate classification and assessments.

Answers institutional questions and provides policy and procedural clarification and interpretation regarding the inmate classification system.

Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

Employees in this job may participate in the performance of their subordinates work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of counseling and casework methods and techniques.

Knowledge of individual and group behavior of underprivileged minorities and persons with criminal delinquent backgrounds.

Knowledge of medical and social services, academic and vocational training, and recreational activities.

Knowledge of the basic principles of supervision.

Knowledge of counseling techniques needed in dealing with individuals with unusually difficult behavior and adjustment problems.

Ability to analyze and make recommendations concerning medical, socio-demographic histories, psychological and psychiatric evaluations, and vocational and educational data.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Departmental staff.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as an Inmate Classification Systems Analyst, Corrections;

Four years of experience providing casework or counseling services to clients or inmates in a social service setting and a bachelor's degree.
