PUBLIC SERVICES TRAINEE FOR CLERICAL SERVICES

DEFINITION:

This is introductory work of a training nature in a clerical field.

An employee in this class receives on-the-job training and classroom instruction to acquire the knowledges, skills, and abilities necessary to develop proficiency in a clerical field. Assignments and degree of working independence vary in accordance with the employee's previous work experience, aptitudes, abilities, and level of education achieved. As proficiency is acquired, increasingly difficult duties are assigned. Work is assigned with detailed instructions and reviewed in progress and upon completion for personal and technical development.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Performs routine clerical duties while participating in classroom and on-the-job training sessions in typing, shorthand, calculating and data recording machine operation, or other clerical services.

Attends formal training classes to learn skills in typing, shorthand, or calculating, or data recording machine operations.

Stamps, sorts, and files correspondence and other documents.

Learns to cut and proofread stencils and to operate a mimeograph machine.

Learns to take telephone messages and operate a small telephone switchboard.

Substitutes or serves as a desk clerk or receptionist in an office or institution.

Opens and sorts mail; maintains files of bulletins and documents.

Learns basic knowledges, skills, techniques, and attitudes required for acceptable performance at the next higher level of work.

Attends classroom and other training sessions.

Performs related work required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability and aptitude to learn and eventually perform adequately in the clerical field.

Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.

Ability to acquire knowledge of good English usage and grammar.

Ability to acquire typing and shorthand skills.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Successful completion of a training course in the clerical field which has been approved by the using agency and the central personnel agency responsible for evaluating the applicant's credentials.
