LIVESTOCK WORKER 2

DEFINITION: This is lead work or advanced manual work in general farm activities or specialized animal care and custody.

Employees in this job are lead workers over Livestock Workers 1 engaged in routine farming work or specialized animal care and custody, or perform advanced farming work or animal care and custody work of equal responsibility. Advanced work includes calibrating and operating breathalyzer machines, operating complicated farm machinery, or responsibility for custody of samples collected from livestock, racehorses, or poultry. Work involves the application of skill and/or judgment while engaged in these activities. Employees receive guidance and direction from a superior through conferences, verbal instructions, and on-site inspections of their activities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assigns and reviews the work of lower-level livestock workers who perform routine manual farm work, animal care and custody, and/or sample collection activities.

Operates breathalyzer equipment or complicated farm machinery such as a Total Mixed Ration Feed Grinder.

Prepares and maintains custody of samples taken from animals, including the custody of split samples that are being contested.

Presents results of breathalyzer tests at hearings before Harness Racing Judges and at administrative fact finding hearings.

Trains new employees in the operation of complicated farm machinery and equipment, and the techniques for splitting and packaging blood samples.

Oversees and participates in general repairs on buildings, and paints fences, barns, and sheds.

Performs minor maintenance work on farm machinery and equipment as needed.

Sanitizes, maintains, and cares for equipment utilized in the performance of duties.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the kinds and uses of farm equipment and tools.

Ability to operate the more complicated farm machinery and to make simple mechanical repairs.

Ability to operate a centrifuge and calibrate and operate breathalyzer machines.

Ability to communicate results of breathalyzer tests.

Ability to oversee farm employees and student help engaged in routine farm tasks.

Ability to work long hours outdoors, performing manual labor, under varied climatic conditions.

Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of practical experience in general farming work or animal custody work including either lead work experience or experience in the operation of complicated farm machinery and equipment; and such training as may have been gained through completion of the eighth school grade;
