JOB TITLE: EQUIPMENT, GROUNDSKEEPING, AND OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR, AGRICULTURE

DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in equipment operation, landscaping, groundskeeping, and laborer activities at the Farm Show Complex and Exposition Center.

An employee in this job plans, organizes, and supervises equipment operation, exterior grounds maintenance, housekeeping services, and setup and disassembly activities at the Farm Show Complex and other facilities operated by the Department of Agriculture. Work involves supervising and participating in equipment operation, waste disposal, snow and ice removal, assembly and removal of food booths and animal stalls, staging of tables and chairs, and landscaping and groundskeeping activities including the application of pesticides and herbicides. Work also includes providing on-the-job training to subordinate staff regarding safety practices, equipment operation, landscaping and groundskeeping methods and techniques, and the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of tools and equipment. Work is assigned by a technical or administrative supervisor through regular and special assignments and is reviewed through on-site inspections, discussions, and reports. Considerable independence is exercised when planning, prioritizing, and scheduling work and in determining methods and procedures to be followed.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Work is differentiated from the lower-level labor foreman jobs by the responsibility for supervising Equipment Operators B.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Oversees crews of equipment operators, semi-skilled laborers, and laborers in preparation activities for shows and events held at the Farm Show Complex to include scheduling staff, assigning work, and ensuring work is performed efficiently.

• Ensures subordinates follow proper methods and techniques in maintaining landscaped areas including planting, cultivating, pruning, spraying, and trimming of grass, trees, shrubs, and plants.

• Applies or oversees the application of a variety of herbicides and pesticides used to control weeds and insects.

• Supervises all grounds maintenance activities including mowing, snow removal, and general upkeep of the exterior of the Farm Show Complex and other areas.

• Compiles and completes item charge sheets for events held for billing purposes.

• Supervises the completion of safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation.

• Supervises the operation, maintenance, and repair of groundskeeping and maintenance equipment including forklifts, backhoes, scrubbers, dump trucks,

lawnmowers, weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, hand tools, leaf blowers, leaf vacuums, sweepers, snow blowers, snow plows, and spreaders.

• Trains staff in the proper use of equipment.

• Provides recommendations into the development of contract specifications for landscaping and snow and ice removal.

• Monitors contractor performance and ensures full compliance with the contract.

• Makes recommendations for equipment and supply orders.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• An employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscaping and groundskeeping including the methods for planting, pruning, spraying, and trimming of trees, shrubs, lawns, and plants.

• Knowledge of the materials, equipment, and tools used in landscaping and groundskeeping.

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

• Ability to review and interpret blueprints and drawings.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges,

Skills, and Abilities):

• Four years of experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, nursery, or greenhouse work and related operation and maintenance of landscaping equipment;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.

• Certain positions require possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and any endorsements necessary to operate specific vehicles.
