AGRICULTURAL MARKETING DIRECTOR
DEFINITION: This is administrative work in planning, directing and coordinating a statewide agricultural marketing and inspection program.
An employee in this class is responsible for administering a comprehensive statewide program relating to agricultural products including inspection and grading services and promotion of use of agricultural products. Considerable public contact is required both in the enforcement standards and in working with producers' associations to assist them in promoting the consumption of their products. Supervision is exercised, through division heads, over a large group of employees engaged in the inspection and certification of a variety of farm products. Work is performed independently with occasional consultation on policy matters with the department head who also reviews reports.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, assigns and supervises work of supervisors, specialists, and clerical force for the bureau; approves inspection and grading standards and supervises their enforcement; supervises the enforcement of dealer licensing and marketing laws.
Develops programs for promoting consumption of state agricultural products.
Assists in the preparation of promotional advertising for agricultural products; works with producers' associations to plan programs for the promotion of their products.
Coordinates the work of state, Federal government and producer groups in the improvement of standards relating to eggs, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and other farm products.
Conducts public hearings on rules and regulations.
Prepares and administers budget for the bureau.
Trains subordinate employees in their work.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the marketing of agricultural products, including techniques, agencies and facilities.
Knowledge of a wide variety of farm products, including accepted standards of quality, common diseases and of potential hazards to consumers.
Knowledge of the principles of agricultural economics.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct a statewide program of marketing of agricultural products.
Ability to work effectively with producers' groups and to plan effective programs for the promotion of agricultural programs.
Ability to direct the enforcement of laws and regulations relating to the inspection and grading of farm products.
Ability to establish and maintain public confidence in a program of marketing agricultural products.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Ten years of experience in agricultural marketing work including five years in a supervisory or administrative capacity; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a four year college or university with major course work in agriculture or marketing;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
