SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Recreation and Conservation series describes professional work in the development and administration of recreation and conservation programs in the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
DEFINITION: This is entry level structured and specialized training in professional parks, recreation, and natural resource conservation planning and administration work.
An employee in this job participates in formal, informal, and on-the-job training to develop professional skills and competence needed to advise and train local governmental officials and partner organizations in recreation and conservation planning, development, and administration. Assignments are designed to develop the trainee’s ability to apply program knowledge and skills in enhancing local governmental park, recreation, and natural resource conservation programs and projects. Work involves assisting in promoting recreational projects; explaining the financial and technical assistance programs available for recreational and conservation planning; assisting in providing technical advice on projects and conservation programs; reviewing project applications for completeness; assisting in providing technical guidance to ensure successful implementation of the project; and assisting in the review and selection of community conservation grant projects. Work is assigned and closely reviewed by the supervisor to ensure adequate progress toward training goals and development of professional competencies. Upon successful completion of the training program, employees will be promoted to the Recreation and Conservation Advisor 1 job.

• Participates in formal, informal, and on-the-job training to develop a working knowledge of various program rules, policies, and best practices and their application to recreation and conservation planning and development projects.
• Under the direction of higher-level advisors, assists local groups in the formulation of projects and programs and helps stimulate interest in initiating recreation and conservation programs.
• Collects, organizes, and analyzes data on recreational facilities and conservation best practices.
• Prepares research documents and presents data in a variety of formats.
• Drafts correspondence, reports, and analyses related to assigned programs and projects.
• Prepares appropriate responses to oral and written inquiries.
• Participates in preparing project and cost analysis to determine accuracy of costs and likelihood of project success.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the principles and practices related to the administration of parks and recreational programs,
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of natural resource conservation planning, development, and implementation.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
• Ability to read and interpret written material.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• A bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, city, regional, urban, or environmental planning, or a closely related field.
