FARM PRODUCTS SHOW DIRECTOR

DEFINITION: This is administrative and supervisory work responsible for developing, directing and managing the annual State Farm Products Show and managing the Farm Show Complex buildings and grounds.

The employee in this class is responsible for all phases of management of the State Farm Products Show and the Complex buildings and grounds, including making arrangements for and scheduling rentals, providing for the safety and convenience of the public, preparing an annual operating budget and arranging for necessary maintenance work on buildings and equipment. Supervision is exercised over a large staff of regular employees as well as temporary crews of varying size depending on the exhibition occurring at any given time. The Director's responsibility shall be to implement policy established by the Commission. The Director shall also interact with the Farm Show Committee at least twice a year as a group, and as requested by individual organization members shall serve as a conduit for information and requests, preparing the same for review and possible action by the Commission. Work is performed with some independence, pursuant to Act 1476 of 1984 reestablishing the Farm Show Commission and granting the establishment of policy for not only the annual Farm Show, but to determine policy and procedures for the use of the Complex for other agricultural and non-agricultural events throughout the year. Work is reviewed by the Deputy Secretary for Marketing, Promotion and Program Services through conferences.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Oversees rentals and activity schedules all facilities for shows exhibits, meetings, and other events, according to Farm Show Commission established rate schedules.

Supervises event bookings and performances, supervises contract preparation and makes other arrangements for building use according to pre-established guidelines.

Responsible for the processing of competitive entries, recording of judging results, distribution of awards and payment of premiums.

Supervises and has oversight responsibility for the deposit of revenues of the Farm Show Complex.

Assures all employees and others are rightfully and properly remunerated for work performed.

Directs work of permanent and part-time staff; oversees evaluation of permanent and part-time staff and directs building maintenance and improvement work.

Assures that relevant information is presented to the public and to prospective lessees of the facilities such as rental rates, Schedule of Events, etc. necessary in order to lease the Complex.

An employee in this class may participate in the performance of their subordinate's work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of methods and requirements of presenting large scale farm products shows as well as other shows, sales, dinners, exhibits, and other events.

Knowledge of business practices, especially in regard to show bookings, production, and building management.

Knowledge of building maintenance practices and safety requirements for buildings of large public assembly.

Knowledge of bookkeeping and general office work.

Knowledge of both Production and Animal Agriculture, enabling this individual to oversee the appropriate care and maintenance of animals while stabled at the Complex.

Knowledge of the equine industry as it relates to all types of Horse Shows and Rodeos.

Knowledge of the use of all types of both agriculture and construction equipment used in the everyday maintenance and upkeep of the Complex.

Knowledge of the Dairy Industry as it relates to the feeding, milking, stabling, and everyday care of both growing and lactating dairy cattle.

Ability to organize, instruct, and direct groups of permanent and temporary employees for varied duties, including but not limited to maintenance, janitorial, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and security tasks.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor's degree with course work in agriculture or agribusiness and ten years of experience in the agricultural exhibition field.
