MILK MARKETING EXAMINER 1

DEFINITION: This is introductory technical work in examining and investigating records and activities pertaining to the production, processing, hauling, and marketing of fluid milk.

An employee in this class performs a limited variety of duties in an introductory work program to develop competence and accomplish agency objectives in assuring the orderly marketing of milk according to state rules and regulations. Work involves assisting in conducting butterfat tests, investigating irregularities pertaining to the hauling and marketing of milk, and verifying dealer payments to producers of fluid milk. Work includes conducting butterfat tests by the Babcock, Gerber, or other approved laboratory methods, verifying accuracy of dealers' butterfat records, and determining that producers have been paid according to state regulations. Work also includes assisting in enforcing compliance with milk marketing regulations pertaining to the shipment and marketing of fluid milk. Assignments are received from a technical superior through observation of work methods and techniques for accuracy, thoroughness and technical development.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in formal and informal training programs to develop competence and skill in the methods and techniques of field investigation, butterfat testing, and public contact work in assuring the orderly marketing of milk according to state rules and regulations.

Performs butterfat tests by the Babcock, Gerber, or other approved laboratory methods to determine that the butterfat content of composite samples agrees with the percentage reported by dealer.

Assists in computing proper payments to producers according to current general price orders, and determining that producers have received payment within legal time limits.

Assists in checking samples of milk for correct weights and grades; inspects weighing and grading equipment for accuracy; observes procedures used in testing milk for compliance with state requirements.

Checks plants for possession of required licenses.

Assists in conducting surveillance of milk operations including the hauling and sale of milk in accordance with state rules and regulations.

Visits retail stores to check prices and collect samples; checks milk dispensers and dairy cases to determine that there is a sale or lease agreement and affix decals; and checks prices on vending machines.

File bond liens at courthouses as directed.

Completes reports of activities in written form.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of milk marketing principles and practices.

Knowledge of the terminology of the milk industry.

Knowledge of common business practices.

Ability to learn techniques and regulations pertaining to the regulation of the milk industry and to develop skill in their application.

Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.

Ability to establish and maintain public confidence.

Ability to operate simple laboratory equipment.

Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience in public contact work; and graduation from high school.
